Well here we are! A happy family of 4 planning our big adventure in 2013. The question on everyone’s lips is “How will we survive with these two small children in a box on wheels for 12 months?” Feel free to follow our blog and see how the year unfolds. We’ll be sure to be honest and offer any tips for others considering a similar lifestyle change.
Who are we…
Darren is a High School Science teacher who is lucky enough to have 12 months leave without pay.
Miffy works/worked in Marketing for a medical company but has recently resigned.
Archie will be 4.5 yrs old when we leave and he is a lovely boy. He’s well into superheroes and TV so we are a bit concerned how much of that he’ll experience on the road.
Rosie is 2 yrs old and starting to talk incessantly! She’s funny and very easy to be around.
Our plan is to head straight to Mildura (where our families live) and then circumnavigate in a clockwise direction thereafter. Sticking close to the coast is a priority as we are fairly passionate fisher-people and hoping to indoctrinate our kids soon as well.
We have a 10 year old Windsor Rapid towed by a Prado. The van has fold down double beds at both ends so the kids sleep together (we hope!). It is semi off road, meaning it has a stronger chassis, bigger tyres etc. There is heaps of storage space, microwave, full oven, dinette area which converts to a double bed, 80L water tank and air con. It is set up for free camping with an extra battery and a generator is on the ‘to buy’ list.
Looking forward to following your journey…with some jealousy! What an experience!
We’ll meet you somewhere and you can join in the fun! Very excited now.
This is all looking a bit fancy. Great set-up. Hamish and Andy have got nothing on you and I want you to buy a hovercraft on the way.
Thanks Pij – Am sure we can fit hovercraft on roof next to kayak, surfboard, bikes, foxtel satellite and tent! xx
What an awesome adventure can’t wait to read all about it and see if you survive with your 2 little ones sounds like great idea – not sure I would survive with my monsters. xx
Thanks Suz – everyone is wondering that. Fingers crossed we dont need to call DOCS.
Wow you four the time is nigh and off you all go!! I hope you have an amazing (and safe and healthy) year with many special experiences. I look forward to following your journey!
Thank you for sharing that beautiful family photo.

Hi Darren. What an exciting journey you’re having. I’m really enjoying reading about your adventures. A wonderful experience for you all. We went to the caravan show last week. There are so many to choose from. With retirement less than 3 years away we need to start planning. Looking forward to following the rest of your journey. Your blog is proving to be a great online trip planner. Take care. Karen
